Service : Irish Army, 1st Armoured Squadron, 5th Motor Squadron, 11th Cavalry Squadron (FCA), Republic of Ireland.
The first Leyland armoured car was built in 1934, and this one was built some time between 1937 and 1939. It was based on a 6x4 Leyland Terrier chassis purchased from Ashenhurst of Dublin in 1934, using armour salvaged from obsolete Peerless cars. The L60 light tank turret was supplied by the Swedish firm of Landsverk. The car entered service with the 1st Armoured Squadron, which was disbanded in May 1940. In 1942 the Leylands joined a heavy armoured car squadron. In the late 1950's the Leylands were re-engined with Ford V-8s. This vehicle's was fitted between January and October 1958, when the hull front was also modified. The four Leylands served with 1st Armoured Squadron until 1972, when the three surviving cars joined 5th Motor Squadron. They ended their service with 11th Cavalry Squadron (FCA) in Castlebar. The car was exchanged for a Ferret 2/7 Scout Car in 1986. [The log book is kept in the Museum's Archive]
